Special Family Storytime with City Lights Theater Company

Theater and libraries: two great things that go beautifully together! At 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, actors from City Lights Theater Company's production of Alabama Story will present a special storytime at the Rose Garden Branch of the San Jose Public Library, 1580 Naglee Ave. At this event for preschool children and their families, actors Karen DeHart, Erik Gandolfi and Jeremy Ryan will read from two books written and illustrated by Garth Williams: The Rabbits' Wedding and Bunnies' ABC

Alabama Story, a new play by Kenneth Jones, is set in the American South in 1959, when a surprising controversy erupted over The Rabbits' Wedding, a sweet picture book depicting a black rabbit and a white rabbit getting married. The play honors Williams' work and the courageous librarian, Emily Wheelock Reed, who defended it. The play runs Jan. 18-Feb. 18 at City Lights, 529 S. Second St., San Jose. Details are at cltc.org.
